D. Fairchild Ruggles bio

D. Fairchild Ruggles (Art History PhD, University of Pennsylvania), is Professor at UIUC where she directs the Joint PhD Program in Architecture and Landscape Architecture and holds additional appointments in Art History, South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Medieval Studies. She is the author of two award-winning books on gardens: Gardens, Landscape, and Vision in the Palaces of Islamic Spain (2000) and Islamic Gardens and Landscapes (2008), and has authored, edited, or co-edited 11 additional volumes on Islamic art, cultural heritage, and the arts patronage of women (translated into Japanese, Turkish, and French). For the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Muslim Journeys Bookshelf initiative she made seven short films on Islamic art. She co-directed the 2015 NEH Summer Institute for College and University Professors on the history of the Alhambra Palace, 14th-20th centuries. Currently she currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Architectural Historians and is Art and Architecture Editor for the Encyclopaedia of Islam (EI3).
